The area, and the churches inside it, that one bishop is in charge of in some Christian churches. The ordinary modern word for the same area is diocese.

You can picture a bishopric as a piece of the map with one bishop's name written across it. The old ending -ric means rule or realm, so the whole word reads like the bishop's realm. Hold that picture and both uses follow from it: the land itself, and the post of the person who holds the land.
