You can picture see as light landing in your eyes — something out there reaches you and you take it in. From that one act of 'it comes into my sight' grows everything else: noticing what's true, understanding an idea, meeting a person, picturing the future. To see is to let something register, whether on your eyes or in your mind.

This see is a completely different word from the verb see. You can picture it as a bishop's seat — the official chair and the district of power that goes with it (as in the Holy See in Rome). It comes from a Latin root meaning 'seat', not from the eye at all.

From Latin 'sedes' (a seat), via Old French 'sed/sied'; the bishop's 'seat' came to mean the area he governs. Different root entirely from the verb 'see' (Old English 'seon').
