Picture the small amount of bile the liver makes: a bitter, yellow-green liquid whose job is to break up fat. Bilious can be thought of as the adjective that stands next to that liquid, and every meaning of the word takes one thing from it — the churned-up feeling, the yellow-green colour, or the bitter taste.
