Picture watching someone from across the room without hearing a word they say. What you can still see — how they treat people, what they do when things go wrong, the pattern that repeats — is their behaviour. The word points at the outside, not the inside: not what someone feels or intends, but what actually shows. That is why science can borrow it for materials and animals too; anything that acts in an pattern has behaviour.

可以想成 behaviour 是這樣的畫面：你在房間另一頭看著一個人，一句話都聽不到，但你還是看得出來——他怎麼對別人、事情不順的時候他做什麼、哪些反應一再出現。這些看得到的部分就是 behaviour。這個字指的是外面，不是裡面：不是他心裡怎麼想、想幹嘛，而是實際顯現出來的樣子。也因為這樣，科學也借去用在動物和材料上——只要會以某種看得出來的方式作用，就有 behaviour。
