You can picture ability as a simple yes-answer to the question 'can you do this?' — the plain fact that someone is able to do something. From that bare fact grow two close relatives: not just whether you can do it, but how well you can do it (your level of skill), and the set phrase that asks you to do it as well as you possibly can.
