Start with the animal itself: a big grey hunter that works with its pack, waits outside where the light ends, and eats fast when it finally eats. For hundreds of years in Europe that animal stood at the edge of the village in winter, hungry and patient. English kept both halves of that picture — the danger you cannot see coming, and the hunger that a plate in seconds.
