You can picture whichever as pointing at a group of things and saying: I am not going to name the one — the situation will name it. Instead of choosing an item yourself, you hand over a rule ('the one that is cheapest', 'the one you like') and let whatever fits that rule step forward.

你面前有幾個選項，你沒有指定哪一個，而是把「挑選的規則」交出去，讓符合規則的那一個自己站出來。whichever = which + ever，which 是「哪一個」，-ever 把它從「問哪一個」變成「不管是哪一個都算」。所以說話的人其實是在說：我不需要現在就知道答案，條件會決定答案。從這個畫面往兩邊長：往「條件會選出它」走，就是「哪一個…就哪一個」；往「所以誰被選到都無所謂」走，就是「不管哪一個」。
