Picture a stock of words that someone can reach for — like a toolbox you carry around. What is in the box is what you can build with; what is missing, you cannot say. From that one picture the word stretches in two directions: whose stock it is (one person's, a whole language's, one field's), and what counts as a 'word' (real words, but also an artist's moves or a dancer's steps).
