Picture something that light can actually reach your eye from — the mountain when the fog lifts, the stain on a white shirt. The word starts as a plain fact about eyes, then quietly raises the bar twice: first to 'clear enough that people notice', then to 'noticed by so many people that everyone knows the name'.
