Think of something that is really there but never reaches your eyes — hidden behind a wall, too tiny to make out, or standing in a room with the light switched off. The thing exists; what is missing is your seeing of it. From that picture, 'invisible' stretches easily to anything present and working but never registered: the people nobody looks at, the money a country earns without a single box being shipped.
