組成union（結合、聯合 → 工會）+ -ism（一種主義、信念或做法）。The -ism ending is the same one in capitalism and socialism: it turns a thing into a belief-system built around that thing. Union itself goes back to Latin ūnus, "one" — a union is people made into one.
