Picture a column of numbers with a line drawn under it and one number written below — everything gathered into a single figure. That gathered-up total is the picture inside sum: many separate things pulled together and expressed as one. From there it slides to the money you count out, to the school exercise that produces the total, and to the short sentence that gathers a whole argument into one line.

可以想成：一堆數字底下畫一條線，線下面只寫一個數——把散開的東西全部收攏成一個。sum 的各種用法就像從這個「收攏成一個」的畫面長出來的：可以是收攏後的錢（一筆金額），可以是產生這個總數的動作（小學算術題），也可以是把一整段話收攏成一句（in sum）。核心不在「加法」這個運算，而在「散的變成一個」。
