You can think of amount as the answer to 'how much?' for things you measure rather than count one by one — a body of water, money, or time that you picture as bigger or smaller, never as a number of separate items.

可以想成 amount 回答的是「有多少？」這個問題，但針對的是不能一個一個數的東西——水、錢、時間這類像一團、一片的量。你腦中浮現的是它「多」還是「少」、那一團有多大，而不是幾個分開的東西。
