You can think of a stocking as a soft tube of cloth made in the shape of a leg: closed at the toe, open at the top, and taking the shape of whatever is inside it. Pull it onto a leg and it is clothing. Take it off the leg and look only at the shape, and it is a long bag with one closed end — which is why the word can also name a Christmas bag hung on a wall, or a band of pale hair that sits on an animal's leg like a sock.
