Picture a pot that has been standing still. Everything heavy has settled at the bottom and the surface looks flat and quiet. Then a spoon goes in. What was lying still is lifted, and the whole pot starts to move. Both uses of this word live on that moment. One watches the very first movement, when you can only just see that something down there has begun to shift. The other watches what a speech or a song does to a room full of people whose feelings had settled the same way.
