You can picture a hand that does not shake. Whatever it is doing, it keeps the same level, the same speed, the same direction — nothing jumps, nothing wobbles, nothing stops. Both uses of steadily come back to that unshaking hand: one puts it in a person (calm eyes, calm breathing), the other stretches it over time (a line on a chart that keeps climbing).
