One way to picture stabbing: the single quick thrust of something pointed. Not a slow press, not a steady weight — one movement, very fast, landing on one small spot. English keeps that movement and hangs two different things on it. Inside the body it becomes the shape of a pain that arrives all at once in one place. Out in the street it becomes the name of an event, an attack made with a knife.
