Piercing has a few related uses. As a noun, a piercing is a small hole made in the body — usually the ear, nose, or — to wear jewelry, and it's also the name of the act of making that hole ("she got a piercing last week"). As an adjective, piercing describes something sharp and intense that seems to go right through you — a piercing scream is loud and sharp, piercing eyes seem to look right into you, and piercing cold feels like it cuts straight through your clothes.
