Hold one picture and the whole word follows: a thin flat blade on the end of a handle. The blade is what does the work. It slides underneath something to lift it, it drags across something to spread it, and it wipes along a surface to it clean. Change the size of that blade and you change the room you are standing in, but never the job.

Borrowed from Latin spatula, a flat piece, the small form of spatha, a broad or flat tool, and before that from Ancient Greek spathe, a broad blade of wood or metal. The word has meant a flat blade the whole way down.
