thermometer 就是「量溫度的工具」，不管量的是空氣、身體還是食物，英文都用同一個字。中文會分成「溫度計」和「體溫計」，英文則是把用途放在前面：a meat thermometer（肉類溫度計）、a clinical thermometer（體溫計）。這個字可以想成從 therm（熱）＋ meter（量東西的儀器）長出來，所以看到 -meter 結尾的字，常常就是「量某樣東西的儀器」。
