Picture a rope tied in a hard knot. Nothing can move while the knot is there; the moment someone works it loose, the rope is just a rope again. Solve is that — something is stuck or tangled, and you find the pull that makes it come apart.

English took solve from Latin solvere, 'to loosen, dissolve; untie, release, detach'. The oldest picture is not 'answer' but 'untie' — the same root sits inside dissolve and absolve, and English still calls a hard problem knotty and its answer a solution.
solve 來自拉丁文 solvere，字面是「鬆開、解開、釋放」。最早的畫面不是「回答」，而是「把結解開」；同一個字根也留在 dissolve（溶解）、absolve（免除）裡。英文到今天還說難題 knotty（打結的）、說答案 solution，走的都是這條線。
