Show means to put a thing where people can see it. Add -ing and you get the moment of that: the one time it stands in front of an audience. Sometimes what stands there is a film or a wall of paintings. Sometimes it is a person, doing what they can do while others watch and judge.

Wiktionary traces the noun to Old English sceawung, a looking at, an examination, an appearance. Looking and appearing sit together in that one old word, which is where both modern uses come from.
