A stern face that does not — no warmth, no smile, no give. Severity measures how far something goes in that unyielding direction.

一張不肯放鬆的臉——沒有笑容,沒有轉圜的餘地,也不打算對你溫柔一點。severity 是在量「這種不放鬆」有多強:可能是一個人的態度不留情面,可能是處罰不給人退路,也可能是天氣、病情、任務本身對人毫不手軟。字尾 -ity 提醒我們它量的是「程度」,所以它常常和 depend on the severity of…、the severity of the injury 這種說法一起出現。

From Latin sevēritās, from sevērus 'stern, strict, serious' — the word starts with a person's stern manner, and the other uses extend from there.

一種想法是:severity 經由法語回到拉丁文 sevēritās,來自 sevērus(嚴格的、不苟言笑的)。也就是說,這個字最早畫的就是「人的態度」——先有不通融的人,才有不通融的處罰;等到把同樣的眼光放到天氣、傷勢、考題上,就變成我們今天最常看到的「嚴重程度」。
