A way to hold it: the state of having no warmth in you. Nothing radiates out; whatever comes near you is not warmed by being near you.

身上沒有熱度散出來的那個狀態。不是主動去傷害什麼，而是不給——靠近的人或物不會因為靠近你而變暖。cold 是形容詞（冷的），加上 -ness 就把它變成一個可以談論的狀態或性質，所以 coldness 講的是「冷這件事本身」。

From Old English cealdness — simply cold + -ness, the ending that turns a quality into a thing you can name and talk about.

來自古英文 cealdness，構造非常單純：cold（冷的）+ -ness。-ness 這個字尾的作用是把一個性質變成一個名詞，讓你可以拿它當主詞、當受詞來談。認得這個字尾很划算：kindness、darkness、weakness、happiness 全是同一個做法，看到 -ness 就可以先猜「某種性質被名詞化了」。
