You can picture send as 'making something go off to somewhere else, away from you' — you stay where you are, but you set a thing (or a person, a signal, even a feeling) in motion towards another place. The thing leaves your hands and travels off; you are the one who starts that going.

From Old English sendan 'to send, cause to go', from Proto-Germanic *sandijaną, the causative of a root meaning 'to go, journey' — literally 'to make (something) go'.
