A seafarer is a person who works on ships, or whose life is travelling by sea — a sailor, said in slightly more formal or older-sounding English. News, law, and official papers like seafarer because it can cover the whole crew: the captain, the cook, the engineer, not only a storybook “sailor”. In ordinary chat, sailor is still the word most people reach for. Though actually it can also mean someone who travels regularly by ship, not only someone whose job is the sea.
