A scallywag is a child who gets into trouble, but the kind of trouble that makes you shake your head and smile. You say it when you are not really angry — more “you little devil” than “you bad person”. Adults can be called scallywags too, in a teasing way, if they have done something naughty but small. It is informal, a bit old-fashioned, and a little storybook. Nobody knows where the word first came from. The American spelling is often ; scally is a British short form.
