A scalawag is a — the same playful word, written the American way. You use it for someone, often a child or a cheeky adult, who gets into small trouble but does not really mean harm. It sounds like a storybook , not a hard insult, and it is a little old-fashioned. Though actually, in older American history books it also named a kind of Southern politician after the Civil War, and that use was not friendly. In everyday talk now, people almost always mean the mischievous kind.
