    A copy of a shape or pattern that you make by laying paper over it and rubbing wax, chalk, or a pencil across the paper, so the shape comes out on the paper.

    「rubbing」不是「摩擦」這個動作，而是摩擦之後得到的那張紙——就是中文說的「拓印」。做法是把紙蓋在有凹凸的東西上（銅牌、石碑、硬幣、樹葉），再用蠟筆或粉筆在紙上來回擦，凸起的地方變深、凹下去的地方留白，圖案就浮出來了。可以想成「圖案從紙底下長上來」，所以它是可數的：a rubbing、two rubbings。

Think of a shape you cannot lift off the stone — a name, a coin, a pattern in a wooden door. You lay thin paper over it and rub a pencil or a piece of wax across the top. Wherever the stone is high, the colour lands; wherever it is cut away, the paper stays pale. The shape climbs onto your paper by itself. A rubbing is that piece of paper: a copy made by rubbing, not by drawing.
