Picture a bell that has just been struck. What comes out is not a bang. It is one clean note that fills the room, reaches the far wall, and hangs in the air for a second after the hit. Everything this word does comes off that note. Sometimes the word names the note itself, even when the note is only inside your own ears. Sometimes it describes a voice that behaves like that note. And sometimes the note has turned into words: a sentence said so clearly and so firmly that it carries to the back of the room and stays there.
