One way to picture it: two words end on the same sound, and that matching tail makes them click together — cat and hat, light and night.

兩個字的尾巴長得一樣，念出來的時候後半段的聲音重疊在一起，像兩塊拼圖卡住那樣「咔」一聲對上——cat 和 hat、light 和 night、moon 和 spoon。要對上的是從重音母音一路到字尾的那一段，所以不是看拼字，是看聲音（love 和 above 押韻，love 和 move 不押）。這個「聲音對上」的畫面，往外可以長成押韻的技法、用押韻寫成的作品，也長出一個講「事情有沒有道理可循」的固定說法。名詞和動詞在歷史上是兩條線（一條來自 Anglo-Norman rime 的名詞，一條來自 rimer 的動詞），但兩邊指的是同一個聲音現象，所以放在一張圖裡看反而清楚。
