A homophone is a word that sounds the same as another word, but the spelling, the meaning, or the origin is different. Knew and new are a famous pair; so are sea and see, two and too, and right and write. English is full of them, which is why spelling stays hard even when your ear is good. Teachers use this word in class; ordinary people more often just say they sound the same. Though actually, some pairs are not a perfect match in every accent — a speaker in London and a speaker in the US may not agree that two words sound alike. The idea is still: same sound, different word.
