Resistant describes something or someone that pushes back against something else, or doesn't let it in or affect it easily. 'Water-resistant' shoes don't let water in easily. 'Resistant to change' describes a person who doesn't like new ideas and prefers to keep things the same. In medicine, some bacteria become 'resistant' to certain medicines, meaning the medicine stops working well against them.
