Land and the buildings standing on it, thought of as property that someone owns and can buy, sell, or rent out. It is an uncountable noun.

One way to hold this word: property you cannot pick up and walk away with. A phone, a bike, a box of books can all leave with you; a field, a shop, an apartment building stay exactly where they are, and owning them means owning a fixed piece of the world. Because the piece is fixed, its position is everything — the same building is worth more beside a station than at the end of a quiet lane.

Wiktionary notes that real here is the legal sense, relating to immovable tangible property, a use it traces back to Latin reālis. So real estate is estate (property) of the kind that cannot be moved — exactly the image above.
Wiktionary 記載：這裡的 real 是法律上「與不能移動的有形財產有關」的那個意思，可以一路追到拉丁文的 reālis。所以 real estate 就是「不能移動的那種 estate（財產）」，跟上面的畫面正好對得起來；real 在這裡跟「真的假的」沒有關係。
