    Not often. If something rarely happens, it happens only a few times, with long gaps in between.

    Mei rarely misses class, so everyone noticed when her seat was empty.

    rarely 就是「很少、難得」，站在 always → often → sometimes → rarely → never 這條頻率線上，靠近 never 那一端，但還沒到完全沒有——偶爾還是會發生。它本身已經帶否定的意思，所以句子裡不用再加 not（說 She rarely eats meat，不說 She doesn't rarely eat meat）。可以想成 rarely 是從形容詞 rare（稀有的）長出來的副詞：rare 說「東西很少見」，rarely 說「事情很少發生」。

You can picture a long line of days with only a few marks on it, far apart. Rarely tells you how thin those marks are spread: the thing does happen, but you would wait a long time between one time and the next.
