    punctuation 講的是「寫作裡的那些符號」——逗號、句號、問號這些，把一長串字切成一句一句、一段一段，讀的人才知道哪裡該停。可以想成：說話的時候有停頓、有換氣、有語氣往上揚，但文字沒有聲音，所以就用這些記號代替；中文的句號、逗號、問號做的也是同一件事。要注意 punctuation 在英文裡不可數，指的是「整套符號」或「標點這件事」；要講其中一個符號，要說 a punctuation mark。
