The word is a of promenade, and a promenade is a walk taken for pleasure and in company, where being out among other people is half the point. Hold that: a stroll, a crowd, a little display. The seaside prom is the place you do it. The London proms are concerts where the cheap floor is full of people standing and moving rather than sitting. The American prom is the night students dress up and walk in.

Wiktionary gives the etymology of prom simply as 'Clipping of promenade.' The three modern uses are three different things you can do on a promenade, each of which kept the short name.
