An esplanade is a wide, open street or walk, along the sea in a town — the place where people stroll, cycle, and look at the water. Hotels and food stalls often sit along it. Though actually it does not have to be by the sea: the older military sense was a flat open space in front of a fortress, cleared so you could see an enemy coming. In English today, if a says the esplanade, it almost always means that handsome seaside (or sometimes riverside) promenade. The word came from French esplanade, a clear level space.
