The thing that goes first so that the real thing can work. It is never the point itself — the colour, the makeup, the bang, the copied strand is the point — but without it, whatever follows has nothing to hold on to and nowhere to start from. You are not supposed to see it in the finished result.

Wiktionary derives this primer straightforwardly from the verb prime plus the agent suffix -er: the thing that primes, that is, the thing that gets something ready to work. That reading covers the whole group, from a tin of paint to a short strand of DNA.

Wiktionary traces this primer to Medieval Latin primarium, a prayer book for ordinary people, from prima, the early-morning hour of prayer. Prayer books of that kind were what late-medieval and early-modern children were taught to read from, so the word moved from prayer book, to the book you learn to read from, to a first book on any subject.
