正式A precedent is something that happened before, and that people later use as an example or a reason to do the same thing again. Judges use precedent a lot: if a similar case was decided one way before, they often decide the new case the same way. Outside of law, people also say 'this sets a precedent,' meaning 'once we do this, people will expect us to do it again.'
