To prattle is to talk on and on about small, silly, or things — a stream of little words. About babies and small children it can sound fairly warm: the child prattles, meaning the talk is not grown-up yet. About adults it is less kind: it suggests the talk is empty and goes on too long. There is also a noun: prattle is that kind of talk. It is a little literary, but more alive than ; you still see it in books and in slightly teasing speech. Not a stiff classroom word, and not slang.
