Pox is an old word for a disease that covers the skin with small, raised, sore spots — like chickenpox (a common childhood illness) or smallpox (a very dangerous disease that doctors have now wiped out with vaccines). In old-fashioned English, 'a pox on you!' was a way of cursing someone, wishing bad luck on them.
