One way to hold potted: a small container, and something put inside it. The container decides how much fits. Roots go into a , so they get that much soil and no more, and the whole plant can now be picked up and carried. Cooked fish goes into a little jar, so you get that much and it keeps. A long history goes onto one card, so only the few facts that matter fit, and the rest stays outside. In every case potted is telling you less about the thing itself than about the small, portable container it has been put into.

The packet's Wiktionary entry gives potted as pot plus -ed, so the word literally means put into a pot. It also records that the word-about-words use grew by analogy with potted meat, first written down by L. Susan Stebbing in Thinking to Some Purpose (1939), where potted thinking is a compressed statement that saves you the trouble of thinking.
