One way to hold this word: a body held in a chosen position, with somebody watching. Someone stops in front of a mirror, squares the shoulders, tilts the chin — and the whole point is the pair of eyes on the other side. Two things are always in the picture: a shape that has been put on, and an audience meant to read it. From there the word travels: an animal holds a position to send a signal, and a person holds an opinion in public the same way, for show rather than for use.
