Picture a surface that should be flat and is not. Your hand runs along it and keeps dropping into small hollows: a road after a wet winter, an iron gate eaten by rust, an old stone step. Nobody made those hollows on purpose and there is never just one of them. That is the whole picture — many small dips, put there over time, in something that used to be smooth.

可以想成一個本來該是平的表面，結果不平。你的手摸過去，一路掉進一個又一個小凹洞：下過整個冬天雨的路面、被鏽吃掉的鐵門、走了幾十年的石階。這些洞沒有人是故意弄的，而且從來不會只有一個。整個畫面就是這樣——很多小凹陷，長時間累積出來，出現在原本平滑的東西上。要記的句型是 pitted with，with 後面放那些洞，或放把洞弄出來的東西。

Now the pit is not a hole in a road. It is the one hard seed sitting in the middle of an olive or a cherry, and pitted tells you somebody has already taken it out. Picture the jar on the shelf with that word on the label: it is a promise that the work is done, so you can tip the fruit straight into the bowl and nobody has to spit anything out.
