Picture a short, thin piece of metal with a sharp point — you push it through cloth or paper to hold things together. A pin is that small, slender, pointed shaft whose whole job is to or hold something in place. Almost everything else is either another kind of thin pointed shaft (a plug pin, a grenade pin, a golf pin) or comes from the action of pinning something so it cannot move.

From Old English pinn 'peg, bolt', from Latin pinna 'feather, point, pointed peg' — the core has always been a small pointed shaft used to fasten or hold.
