Picture a meal that has been picked up and carried out of the house: the food is packed into a basket or bag, and the eating happens on the grass, on a rug, under a tree. A picnic can be thought of as a whole little scene rather than just food — the going out, the sitting down, the sharing, the easy mood. Because the scene is such a relaxed, pleasant one, English can also use it as a measuring stick for how easy something is.
