A scientist who has special training in physics — the study of how the world works at a deep level: light, heat, motion, atoms, forces. You will meet physicists in labs, universities, and space programmes; it is a job-word, not a street-word. An English , William Whewell, made this word in 1840 so that physics could have a person-word, the way chemistry has chemist. Though actually, people still mix it up with physician because the two look like sisters: a physicist studies physics; a physician is a medical doctor. They share an old root around “nature”, but the jobs are not the same.
