Perplexed describes a person — or a look, a face, a voice — who is confused and a little worried by something they do not understand. You are perplexed; the problem is not. It is a step more serious than : there is a knot in it, and often a touch of , not just a missing word. You can be perplexed by a maths question, by a short email, or by why someone would say that. It is common in writing and in careful speech; in very casual talk, confused or lost often does the same job.
