Picture a flat plate made for a foot. Your hands are busy or too weak for the job, so the machine gives your foot a place to push — and that push goes straight into the machine and turns into movement, power, or a change in sound. Everything this word does comes from that one plate under a foot: the thing itself (bike, car, piano), the act of pushing it round, and the phrase for pushing it as hard as it will go.

Latin 'pes / ped-' meaning 'foot' — the same root behind pedestrian and pedicure; a pedal is literally the foot-part of a machine.
